It is hugely interesting that the CIS has disclosed that Filipina brides rank in the top two among long-distance relationships that culminated in marriage with Americans.

No prizes for guessing that the other popular group traipsed over from south of the Rio Grande.

Can it really be true love?

Being the pragmatic people that we are, you have to ask yourself, “Is it true love?” Or are Filipina bride-hopefuls just one more in a multitude of avaricious seekers for the almighty buck, green card and blue passport?

C’mon now, a man who has been around the singles bar scene long enough ought to be canny enough to tell.

Is the lady really interested in you?

Ask Reginald Lewis, first African-American billionaire and Chairman of Beatrice Foods after a little leveraged buyout exercise. He took a Filipina bride, one Loida Nicolas, a summa cum laude back in the Philippines and member of the New York bar.

Loida not only had the business acumen to take over the helm of Beatrice Foods after Reginald’s untimely death, she memorialized him by authoring “Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun?” Greater love than this, no woman has.

In turn, Kenneth Natori of New York chose for his Filipina bride Josie Natori, erstwhile stockbroker at Bache and Merrill Lynch. If the name sounds familiar to the women in your family, that’s because Josie proved herself not only the most devoted of brides but a genuine star in the NYC fashion firmament with a long-famous line of lingerie and loungewear.

How do we meet a Filipina?

The rest of us mere mortals are apprehensive about hooking up online.

Corruption is everywhere, shades of Gov. Bogdanovich! Most expats doing business there say it’s gotten a whole lot better though.

Scratch below the surface of a Filipino, however and you find a placid, cheerful disposition.

Everywhere you go in the archipelago, plain folk will call you “Joe” in honor of the G.I’s who liberated the Philippines from the Japanese half a century ago.

If your fiancée’s family is in the countryside, they will hold a feast in your honor, ply you into a stupor with drink (San Miguel beer is superb, but so is a native firewater that resembles pretty good raw rum) and vie to show you the sights. It is a gracious hospitality that expects nothing in return but your happy nod that you’re having a fine ol’ time.

No wonder not a few fellow Americans and Aussies not to mention Europeans, have decided to immerse themselves in the extended families of their in-laws and live there for the rest of their lives.

But those are retirees and you have a whole career ahead of you. So it’s back home to the States with your shy and soft-spoken Filipina bride. What do you have to lose but a lifetime of friendship and steadfast family life?
