Things are Better than Good in Philippines

At Boracay

I'm an American and I met my Filipina totally by accident in a MySpace chat room.

It was in the wee hours of the morning when I went on...something I almost never do. She "bleeped" in and said hello; I ignored the intrusion thinking she would offer her webcam for "only 99 cents per minute."

After her second attempt, I bit.

We talked, laughed and the magic began. I'm no fool so I took all she said with some level of skepticism, but each of the many chat sessions gave me reason to believe most of what she said was true.

After 3 months and lots of "skyping" we made plans to meet in Manila. A 25 hour plane flight made me think, at my age, why in hell am I doing this? Then too,I was scared.

I've been around, but who hasn't heard the rumors about Manila...getting knocked in the head and waking up missing a kidney.

She greeted me at the airport and a cab took us to the Pan Pacific hotel where, at least, I felt reasonably safe and comfortable. The next day she showed me around the city and we flew off to Boracay.

It seemed as though we were meant for one another. All of this has been almost 3 years ago, and I visit her every 4 months or so. American immigration has been unkind on my end but we're working on that.

My advice to Americans is that be careful, but the Philippines and Filipinas are worth the trouble.

American Embassy
by: Mark

As a US citizen and veteran I am embarrassed by the American Embassy's treatment of Filipinas. My g/f has just been denied for the third time a visitor's (tourist) visa. I have received the intervention of my apparently ineffectual congressman, but he is given the same worn out responses as I..."She doesnt meet our criteria." or "She has insufficient contacts with the Philippines to ensure her return." or "She has no international travel experience."

When we ask what are the admissions criteria, the embassy responds "We are not required to tell you that." Insufficient contacts?...She is a homeowner who is college educated has had the same good job for 7 years, has 2 young children and no criminal record. No international travel experience?...She spent 4 months in the UK and returned as required...less than 4 years ago.

To add insult to injury, Filipinas are frequently treated rudely and accused of immoral or illegal activity during the course of the cursory interview. Contrast this with the respectful, and congenial ways the Philippines has treated this American.

Just wondering what issues you're facing?

Thx.
