robbed in roof toop hotel subic

by joseph sweeney
(london england)

Me and my brother stayed at a hotel called the rooftop in subic.

We put our money in a safe deposit box behind the hotel check in desk. We were asked to fill out a form detailing what we were putting into the safe, which i found strange.

So we did this, our goods were put into a plastic bag and we where given a key each with our names. We stayed here for three days, when we checked out only to find we had been robbed of nearly one thousand pounds English!

We contacted the local police and where told that as we where English this will look bad on the Philippines people and they refused to help us. I’ve emailed the hotel with no response.

If the police had just helped us I had insurance and can claim a small amount of the money back, I went to the police twice showing them the form filled out as evidence.

I can say I stayed in a lot of hotels on my trip last week and had no problems with any of them only this one!

Hi Joseph,

I’m really sorry about your loss, especially when you did the right thing and put your belongings in the safe deposit box.

I have never stayed at the Roof Top Hotel in Subic, I’m not even sure where it is? It is also disappointing that the police were not prepared to assist you and your brother.

Did the Roof Top Hotel in Subic give you any advice at all?

Brett

Sad about you losing your money in a hotel safe. It's not kind to blame you for not knowing you would be rob!

The hotel responsibility is to help you and investigate. Meaning police should be called by the manager . Unless of course, the staff are all in it.

You're not to blame since you couldn't have predicted what happen. It is rather insensitive however to assumed you're dumb or stupid. It's obvious not everyone who stayed in that hotel got mugged of their belongings. It's true, rather strange asking you to lists contents of your safe!

So, unfortunate for you since it's a lot of money. Those people who stole them will be punished one day! I am more concern the hotel lacked of initiatives to help you. You know the answer why- they are a bunch of greedy and dodgy peeps.

On a different note: not everyone in hotels are bad and I'm sorry for your bad experience. It is just sad, that some people justifies these kind kind of behaviour.

I just read this robbery incident and i would like to add that crime is everywhere. ciertainly don't diminish what was said here but is very regrettable.
I have stayed in this hotel a few times BUT i do take my precautions. DON'T trust the front desk with their safe boxes. that thing about detailing the content is rubbish!!!! plain and simple and on that i would blame you for been so naive or dumb!!!! a smart world traveller would never do this but i do hope you learn a lesson on this case.
I would stay again in this hotel, is good, clean and no problems bringing gilrs for the nite. on top the food is great and cheap.

Rooftop hotel
by: Anonymous

I stayed at the rooftop for 5 days end of Jan 2016 never had any problem The room I and the room my companion stayed in had a programmable safe in the rooms. I found it to be a nice clean hotel. We stayed there because the Arizona across the street was booked. The Rooftop had nicer rooms for less money so I will stay there next time in Subic.

American visiting last 7 years....
by: Anonymous

I have been to PH 14 times over 7 years. Ripped off one time in a Hotel in Ermita, Manila - The Sloutch Hat Inn.....500 US was taken from my suit case when I went out....my fault for leaving it in there unlocked...why didn't they take it all???a trusted aussie friend that lives there told me it happens a lot there....inside job by staff split with the owner. Ok....Subic....I have stayed at the Roof Top Subic recently and had a pleasant stay...Arizona is my first choice, but they were fully booked. The coffee shop ground floor has excellent food at very reasonable prices, and great service. I would never lock money up in a "hotel desk safe"......too easy for a crooked staff member to steal, resign a few days later, and get another job down the road. 1000 UK is one years pay for a worker there.....too temping. My money is locked in my backpack...which goes everywhere I go. Not worried now about getting ripped off by "insiders". and they are around there.

Rooftop is fine
by: Dave

Stayed at the rooftop many times and never had a problem. I recommend the hotel to anyone travelling there and not sure what this slanderous thread is all about. The rooms are very hygienic, spacious, the hotel is well located and again cannot believe the babble I have read above. Sound like 1st time Philippines visitors to me.

when you travel trust only yourself mate. i have stayed at the roof top many many times over the last year and a half and have had no problems with service or personal property.

Yes their is corruption but so is their in yours and my country. I dropped my visa in olongapo and a young man saw who picked it up, when I asked if he new where he went he stopped work jumped in with us and we found him 2 hrs latter with my visa at the cop shop, less the money but that might of been the cops. So ITS NOT ALL BAD IN THE PHILIPPINES.

Money problems?
by: Anonymous

It seems here in Olongapo City the Police work for the Mayor? As they are under his authority, they seem to unwilling to act unless there is no interest in the business in question, they are subject to transfer, or being fired if they act against any owner without checking with the Mayors Office.

Interesting that they are put into that position. It seems they really have no purpose or authority as the people do not trust or respect the Police. Police here have no respect as they are ignored by the general public and look upon the Police as a nuisance, and feel that they do not have to respond or respect them. So use your own common sense when visiting here and keep your money with you or maybe a bank.

Philippines rip off
by: Anonymous

Years ago I got done in (lost about AUD 700) by a money changer in Emerita, Manila. I told the hotel reception (Centrepoint Hotel) about the incident. The hotel manager called the local police and I was questioned about the incident and locality, which was a small restaurant.

About 8 hours later the missing money was returned to me!!!! I could not believe what happened and asked the inspector about the circumstances of how the money was returned.

He explained that it is important that the police look after tourists, due that tourism is so important to the Philippines. He simply went to the place and requested that the money to be returned within 10 hours, or the place will be shut down and not allowed to reopen till the money was returned!!!

True story of Philippine justice at work.

It's more fun in the Philippines
by: Millette

This is something you should forward to the Department of Tourism. They are currently promoting the tourism industry very strongly with the slogan, "It's more fun in the Philippines."

They should look into something like this very seriously if they want to be successful in attracting more international tourists there. If nothing happens, then you can post your experience to their facebook account.

Rubbish (the money that u didn't indicate)
by: Anonymous

Yeah, that's bologna! You don't need to tell them anything. They're the one that stole it. They're the one with the master lock or master key or combination to the safe. No one else would know but them. It probably happens to a lot of tourist there. Just give it a review to give it a bad rap so no one would go there anymore. You could've went to the press/public or some sort of tv station so they can investigate. You should've asked for the owner of the hotel. That's just terrible. It makes the PI a terrible place to visit or go back home too.

robbed at the Roof Toop Hotel-Subic
by: Anonymous

Dude, don't trust Filipinos. They're bunch of crooks even the govt. Don't trust anyone that you don't know. That hotel sux.

You should've signed something that they are liable to your property in case something happens like that; therefore you can claim it.

They should be responsible for it. You should've talked to the manager or the hotel owner. How does it get robbed in the hotel? Hmmmmm! Only an employee would know and would do it. Inside job man.

Sorry for what happened but you should've known better.

I've tried everything to get a comment without any luck at all, i don't think we can be the only people this has happened to, if you think about it who asks whats in the safe, how much money?

This has never happened before in any hotel I've stayed there normally not interested in what you are putting in there.
