From good to bad experience manila zoo

Never been to the zoo in Manila, Philippines, I'm from the US and my wife said it would be a nice experience.
So yesterday we went to the zoo with her nephew. Long story short, the beginning of the zoo was nice with the elephant and the snakes.
Once we walked through the tunnel and around the turtles, we came across a alligator area. Two we're inside, one in the water and the other on top in the grass/dirt area. They are very big and appeared to be sleeping. Before I knew it, a zookeeper opened the gate in the rear and brought a very long bamboo stick/pole with a large nail at the end. The reaction of the alligator was apparent, it was ready to strike soon as it saw him.
Then, that's when the bad experience began, he took the bamboo stick/pole and began hitting the alligator over the head, blood I saw was already there from a obvious earlier beating. He continued beating the alligator and more blood began to drip and flow from it's head.
After about 10 times, I looked at my wife and said we have to leave, I couldn't take this kind of punishment toward any animal or beast.
Needless to say, I will not be back for a visit to watch the horrific act again.
